Flashmate L-308X Light Meter (Exposure Meter). The Sekonic L-308X Flashmate is a compact light meter for both flash and ambient light, as well as for film production, Cine, and HD Cine modes. The meter quickly and easily provides accurate exposure by measuring either incident light directly from the light source or reflected light from the subject. A clear LCD display shows selected settings and measured values in full, half, or 1/3 steps. When using full steps, values are displayed with 1/10-stop precision.
Incident or direct light measurement
The most common way to measure light from studio flashes and speedlights is directly toward the light source. For portrait photography and other three-dimensional subjects, the spherical diffuser should be positioned in front of the sensor. For copy work (artwork, maps, etc.), the included flat diffuser is used. This diffuser is also used for contrast measurement and determining exposure range within a scene. The Sekonic L-308X Flashmate can also measure reflected light from the subject—in this case, no diffuser should be placed in front of the sensor. The metering angle is approximately 40°, equivalent to a standard lens.
Flash and ambient light measurement
The Sekonic L-308X Flashmate measures both flash and continuous light sources such as sunlight. For flash metering, shutter speeds from 1 second down to 1/500 second can be set, allowing accurate aperture readings. The meter can be connected to a flash via a PC sync cable, triggering the flash when the measurement button is pressed. Alternatively, the flash can be triggered manually via a test button or remotely (e.g., with Elinchrom Skyport) while the meter is in standby mode. For ambient light, the meter can display combinations of shutter speeds from 60 seconds down to 1/8000 second and apertures from f/1.4 to f/90.9.

Accurate exposure values
The Sekonic L-308X Flashmate offers very high measurement accuracy. When set to display full aperture stops, values are shown with 1/10-stop precision. It can also display half or 1/3 steps to match camera exposure settings. For video and film work, frame rates from 8 to 128 fps can be selected. ISO sensitivity can be set from 3 to 8000 in 1/3-step increments.
Compact size
The Sekonic L-308X Flashmate is one of the smallest light meters on the market for both flash and ambient light. It is small enough to fit in a shirt pocket or a camera bag pocket. Despite its size, it is a highly capable meter used daily by professional photographers worldwide. It is powered by a single AA battery and weighs only 95 grams.
